Fellow: Designation as a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Psychology encompasses a professional knowledge base and a broad array of skills and techniques used by doctors of psychology for the identification, prevention, intervention and amelioration of a variety of mental disorders and the psychological components of physical disorders by means of psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy. You may join as a Fellow of the Academy if you meet (and allow us to verify) the following criteria:
a) A doctoral degree from a psychology program accredited by the APA, CPA, or listed in the publication Doctoral Psychology Programs Meeting Designation Criteria, or that has been accepted for your state licensure. Applicants credentialed in the most recent directory of the National Register of Health Service Providers in Psychology, the Canadian Register of Health Service Providers in Psychology, or the Certificate of Professional Qualification in Psychology (CPQ), (ASPPB), or having a training program accepted upon state agency review for state licensure qualify as meeting the doctoral degree requirements.
b) Licensure or Certification at the independent practice level as a psychologist in the State, Province, or Territory in which the psychologist practices.
c) Applicant program of study must meet APA model guidelines of 300 hours with 100 patient/1year preceptorship or its equivalent. The program may be a matriculated and accredited post doctorate Masters Degree in Medical Psychology, or Psychology with medical psychology components, or a Board reviewed and approved CE program (APA or CPA CE Credits) that meets similar curriculum and training guidelines.
d) The applicant training program in medical psychology must be offered by a regionally accredited institution of higher education or postdoctoral program sponsored by a state or provincial psychological association or other continuing education entity whose offerings qualify for continuing education credit as authorized by the APA.
e) The applicant must submit a photo copy of a photo ID (such as a state driver's license). In addition we must have a social security number so we can verify the background check through E-Verify (you will have to request the forms and sign them so we can do this background check).
f) Submission of the aplication and related forms and documentation and releases and a $150 application fee. Eventually, doctors approved and advanced to Candidacy (approved training), will have to Take A Written Examination (either one supplied by the board, or evidence of successful passage of the VERITAS or PEP exams), and The Oral Examination provided by the Board (Examination fee $500).

Here is a short outline of how the application for Board Certification in Medical Psychology (which is different than Academy of Medical Psychology Membership which can be held by any licensed psychologist with interest in medical psychology) process proceeds:
1. We receive your packet with our forms (see this web site) and $150 check and transfer a copy the Executive Director-Dr. Morris, and a copy to Dr. McClure's Credentials Committee, and we put the Originals and a copy of the check in central office file for the applicant.
2. When Dr. McClure's committee reviews and approves the applicant for candidacy, we will ask for a check ($500 oral and written examination) and the background check, and you will be alerted by central office staff (Bethany Nevins) that there will be a cost and function relative to a national background check ($12.50) if you are passed out of credentials committee.
3. When Credentials Committee and clearance of the $150 application fee, and a good background check, is on file, we will advance you to "CANDIDATE" status (or notify you about remedial work or training required to qualify) which qualifies you to pay the $500 application fee (noted above) and take the Oral (Usually people choose the Skype Option, and sit for examination by 3 Diplomates using our approved essay questions and related queries) and Written Examination by issued password on our web site (or substitute the PEP or VERITAS) exams.
4. If the Candidate pays the exam fee, successfully passes a writen and oral exam, they will have their application and Candidacy reviewed by the Board.
5. If the board finds them approved and qualified they can notify the Candidate that they are being advanced to Diplomat Status and that they have all the standing, status, and privileges of a Specialist in Medical Psychology as long as they are current in their annual dues of $85.
